Travel Goals, Trello Boards & Bucket List Living: How One Couple Plans a Life Worth Remembering

Meet John — a globe-trotter with a Trello board that could put even the most seasoned digital nomads to shame. It’s about living with purpose, planning with intention, and understanding how powerful it can be to have goals — both shared and individual — especially as we grow older.

Plan a life worth remembering…

Still travelling? Absolutely. Still got the passion? Without a doubt.

Meet John — a globe-trotter with a Trello board that could put even the most seasoned digital nomads to shame. His travel plans include everything from Hawaii and Kentucky to the Panama Canal, Costa Rica, and Peru — and that’s just December!

But this isn’t just about racking up frequent flyer points. It’s about living with purpose, planning with intention, and understanding how powerful it can be to have goals — both shared and individual — especially as we grow older.

The Trello Board That Maps a Life of Adventure

Yes, you read that right. John and his wife Cheryl use Trello to plan their travels, their goals, and even their dreams.

They’ve created three columns on their shared board:

  • John’s Bucket List

  • Cheryl’s Bucket List

  • Joint Goals & Adventures

And here’s the kicker: if it’s on the board, it usually happens.
But if life gets in the way? No problem — they simply move it to a “Next Year” column. It’s not about giving up, it’s about pivoting with purpose.

💡 The Robert Kiyosaki Mindset Shift

After spending time with Rich Dad Poor Dad author Robert Kiyosaki in Hawaii, John walked away with a powerful insight:

To have a strong relationship, you need individual goals — as well as shared ones.

When John and Cheryl first got together, they tried to adopt each other’s hobbies — dogs and golf — but quickly realized something key:

“You don’t have to share everything to grow together.”

Now, they respect each other’s space and passions. Cheryl doesn’t fish. John doesn’t do show dogs. And that’s perfectly okay. The secret sauce? Balance and independence, built around a foundation of shared adventure.

🛑 When Plans Change: Purpose Keeps You Moving

Of course, life throws curveballs. In 2017, John had to cancel a long-awaited trip to Germany after his mother passed away. Instead of mourning the missed opportunity, he shifted the plan — and fulfilled the dream two years later.

Then came 2020. You guessed it: COVID cancelled their Panama Canal trip. But again, it wasn’t scrapped — just postponed.

“If a plan falls through, we don’t fall apart. We just move it along the Trello board.”

🧭 Travel, Purpose & Healthy Ageing

There’s something deeply motivating about having a trip — or ten — on the horizon. It gives life structure, excitement, and energy.

John’s mum lived to 99. He’s determined to beat her.

His secret?
➡️ Keep taking your supplements.
➡️ Keep planning something to look forward to.
➡️ Keep living with purpose.

🎣 Fishing Trips, Solo Missions & Quality Time

Travel doesn’t always mean doing everything together. John takes solo trips — like his visit to the Maritime Museum in Greenwich — without guilt or compromise. Cheryl opts out of fishing trips, and John respects that.

“I could offer her money to go fishing, and she still wouldn’t come. And that’s the beauty of it.”

These individual escapes give each of them breathing room. It’s in those moments — often out on a boat or in a museum — that reflections, conversations, and even life-changing insights emerge.

💬 Final Thoughts: Life is What Happens While You’re Planning It

Just like John Lennon said.

Having something to look forward to — and a system to track it — might be one of the most underrated strategies for longevity, resilience, and joy.
